Enable File Storage on a record type

Turn the File Storage drop zone and file list on for a standard NetSuite record (e.g. Vendor, Customer, Vendor Bill) or for a custom record — including custom records that ship inside other SuiteApps.

When to use this

By default, the File Storage widget is hidden and needs to be explicitly enabled on each record type your account uses. Do this once per record type after installation, then again whenever you decide to start storing files against an additional record type. The two paths — standard records versus custom records — are slightly different but both are admin-only and take a couple of minutes per record type.

Prerequisites

  • File Storage installed and Portal registered for the subsidiary
  • Administrator role or the FC Storage Admin role
  • The record type you want to enable already exists (for custom records, the custom record type must be created first)

Walkthrough

Standard NetSuite records

To enable the widget on a standard record type (Vendor, Customer, Vendor Bill, etc.), use the Supported Records configuration screen.

A step-by-step Scribe walkthrough for enabling File Storage on standard records is being recorded. Track its status in the Scribe register (internal).

Custom NetSuite records

File Storage can also function on custom records, including custom records from other SuiteApps. Use the Supported Custom Records screen.

A step-by-step Scribe walkthrough for enabling File Storage on custom records is being recorded. Track its status in the Scribe register (internal).

Tips

Test your custom record configuration in your sandbox account before applying it in production. If a custom record's structure changes in a way that File Storage doesn't expect, the widget can produce script errors that block save — easier to find in sandbox.

What success looks like

  • Opening a saved record of the enabled type shows the File Storage drop zone in the body of the record, plus a Documents heading underneath where uploaded files appear.
  • Uploading a small file from the drop zone completes successfully and the file appears under Documents within a few seconds.
  • The custom field that File Storage adds to the body of the record is visible. (You can re-position the field by editing the record's form template if your account uses a customised form layout.)

Gotchas

  • Files can't be uploaded during the create flow. The record must be saved first — File Storage links files to the record's internal ID, which only exists after the first save.
  • Disabling the widget on a record type. To stop File Storage from running on a specific record, locate the FC Storage Record UE script, open its Deployments tab, edit the deployment for that record, and untick Deployed. Don't delete the deployment — that may be reset on the next File Storage upgrade.
  • Forms with locked layouts. If your account uses a heavily customised form, the File Storage field may land in an unexpected position. Edit the form template to move it.
